The road has often been rated as one of the most dangerous in the UK

One of the Peak District's best-known roads is to be closed for about six months for maintenance and stabilisation work.

The A54, known as the Cat and Fiddle, will be shut in two phases - for 14 weeks from late July until late October 2026, and 12 weeks in Spring 2027.

The route, which along with the A537 runs from Buxton in Derbyshire to Macclesfield in Cheshire, is known for its scenic views, steep inclines, and tight bends.

Derbyshire County Council said the two phases would improve the road surface, drainage and road safety, and also strengthen the earth banks.

The closures are due to take place either side of the winter weather

The Cat and Fiddle is often named among the most dangerous roads in the UK due to its blind bends and steep drops.

Phase one of the work is due to run from 27 July 2026 until 30 October 2026 and will see the road closed between a hill known as The Terret and the junction with the A537.

It will involve road and drainage improvements, including laying high friction surfacing at bends for increased skid resistance, repairs to pavements and upgrading signage.

The exact dates for phase two have not been confirmed but it will focus on the remaining stretch of the A54 to its junction with the A53.

This work will involve reinforcing earth banks either side of the road and the extension and repair of safety barriers and bike guards.

Access will be maintained for properties and businesses on the route.

A signed diversionary route will also be in place using the A53, A523, A537 and the A54.
