Work under way on new HS2 cycle bridge

Engineers have begun installing a new cycle bridge as part of HS2 construction works.

Once completed, it would connect the Offchurch Greenway in Warwickshire to Route 41 of the national cycle network, HS2 Ltd said.

The new bridge, expected to open in September, would also keep cyclists and pedestrians away from passing traffic, a spokesperson added.

The B4455 Fosse Way, near Offchurch, is closed until 26 April to allow the brdge to be lifted and lowered into place.

Work started in July, with teams digging out and replacing an old embankment and carrying out other construction and drainage works.

The bridge will complement HS2's earlier programme of work, completed in October, which saw the opening of the nearby Fosse Way bridge and Offchurch Greenway bridge, which carries road and cycling routes across the high-speed railway.

Vicki Lee, HS2 Ltd senior project manager, said all three bridges played an important role in "improving safety and connectivity".

"When the new bridge opens, I'm confident it will be welcomed by cyclists from near and far who visit Warwickshire to enjoy this stunning section of the Route 41 trail," she said.

Monica Fogarty, chief executive of Warwickshire County Council, added: "The bridge will provide a key link which will create a flagship cycle route from Leamington [Spa] to Rugby to benefit many generations to come."
