Sand art on seafront to promote cycle tour

Artists will create a large sand drawing on Skegness beach as part of the build-up to the Tour of Britain men's cycle race.

A tour poster, approximately 48m by 40m (157ft by 131ft) will be created on the seafront to celebrate the resort's role in hosting the cycling event.

The race will arrive in Lincolnshire for its opening two stages. The second stage will start in Boston on Thursday 3 September, cover 180.2km (112 miles) across the county and finish in Skegness.

Steve Kirk from East Lindsey Council said the sand drawing would create "a real sense of anticipation and demonstrate the unique character of our coast".

Artists Sand in Your Eye will begin creating the poster on the afternoon of Thursday 20 August and continue into the evening.

As part of the promotional event for the tour, street entertainers Yellow Bus Events will also perform in the nearby Tower Gardens between 11:00 and 16:00 BST.

The council said performances would include street circus, walkaround musical acts, a motorised piano and performers from Swank Street Theatre.

Kirk said Skegness was looking forward to welcoming riders, teams and spectators from across the country.

Stage one of the event will start and finish in Lincoln with a 182.5km (113 miles) route north of the city on Wednesday 2 September.
