Pedestrian in 70s dies after being hit by car

A man in his 70s has died after being hit by a car.

Northumbria Police said it received reports of the collision on Wealcroft near the Staneway junction in Gateshead at about 16:45 BST on Monday.

The man was struck by a blue Volvo S40 car and died at the scene.

An 18-year-old was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and has since been released on bail, the force said. Sgt Greg Huntley urged witnesses to contact the police.
