Officer jailed for sex with inmate in prison toilets

A prison officer who had a "serious and sordid" sexual relationship with a serving inmate has been jailed.

Claire Hall, 52, worked at the adult male Lindholme Prison, near Doncaster, from 1999 until 2024.

Hall developed a sexual relationship with an inmate aged in his 30s over six months, Sheffield Crown Court heard, and had sex with him twice in toilets for prison staff.

Hall, from Barnsley, admitted misconduct in public office at a previous hearing and was given a nine-month prison sentence.

Fellow prison officers had become aware Hall was "over familiar" with the inmate in 2023, the court heard.

The sentencing hearing was told she spent 12 minutes in the inmate's cell during a training exercise months later, despite a warning of no contact between inmates and officers during the training.

The Recorder of Sheffield, Judge Jeremy Richardson KC, said Hall had been involved in a "serious and sordid" episode which amounted to a "true catastrophe" for both Hall and her family.

"This case is a paradigm example of how a prison officer should never behave," he told the court.

"It is a catastrophe in every dimension. It equates to gross misconduct."

Her barrister argued that Hall had been divorced for 13 years, was lonely and that the inmate had listened to her.

They said the relationship was a "friendship that developed over time", with the instances of sex merely a "moment of madness" on Hall's part.

Hall admitted guilt to her superiors and resigned after her actions came to light, the court heard, and she supported the subsequent investigations.

Judge Richardson added: "Immense trust is reposed in prison officers to execute their duties with professionalism - you failed completely in that regard."
