Firefighters were called to St George's Church after a passer-by saw flames and smoke coming from the cemetery

A fire that broke out at a church cemetery in the early hours is thought to have been started deliberately, the fire service has said.

Fire crews were called shortly after 06:00 BST when flames and smoke were seen billowing from St George's Church on the High Street, Fordington, Dorchester, Dorset.

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said the fire in the grounds was put out with a hose reel jet before firefighters worked to dampen down the area to make sure the fire was fully out.

The fire service said the cause was under investigation, while Dorset Police said they were making inquiries.
