There are about 2,800 litter and dog waste bins across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole

Separate bins for dog waste and litter will be phased out and replaced with a single bin across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP).

There are about 2,800 litter and dog waste bins of various types and sizes across the three towns.

BCP Council said underground bins would be considered as storage is generally higher, the frequency of collection may be reduced and smart technology can be used to increase efficiency

The proposal was unanimously approved by BCP Council's cabinet.

Green Councillor Kate Salmon asked if it would be possible to make sure ward councillors are proactively involved as they have localised knowledge about where would be best for the bins to be located.

Independent councillor Andy Martin said: "It is really outrageous when there are so many people, who should know better, who can't be bothered to go to a bin or just leave rubbish...

"There are lots of residents who treat our environment with disrespect and should know better."

Lib Dem councillor Richard Burton said: "A lot of dog walkers actually do their walk in a place they know where those bins are, and they don't like changing the walk."
