Firefighters tackling blaze at recycling depot

Firefighters are tackling a blaze at a recycling depot on the outskirts of Huddersfield.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service said it was called to Matrix Direct Recycle Ltd in Kirkheaton at about 09:30 BST, with 10 crews currently dealing with the fire.

Large plumes of smoke could be seen rising from the warehouse on Newland Road.

School Lane has been closed during the incident, with the fire service urging the public to avoid the area. Local residents are advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed.

Emma Butler, head of commercial at Electrical Waste Recycling Group, which runs the facility, thanked the emergency services for the speedy response.

She said: "We have had a fire at our Huddersfield recycling centre. All our staff are safe, which is our main priority.

"The extent of the fire is still unknown and we cannot comment further at this time."
