A man appeared in court in connection with a riot two years ago, after being arrested at Newcastle Airport.

Jamie Lathan, 38, of Hartburn Avenue, Stockton-on-Tees, appeared at Teesside Magistrates' Court on Thursday charged with violent disorder in Middlesbrough in August 2024.

The town saw a night of unrest in a wave of disorder that followed anti-immigration fuelled misinformation about the fatal stabbing of three young girls in Southport.

Lathan, who police said had been on a flight from Alicante, Spain, was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Teesside Crown Court for trial on 17 July.

Cleveland Police said Lathan returned to the UK on a flight on Wednesday.

The force said the community had been subject to "frightening abuse, criminal damage and violence" during the unrest on 4 August.

Assistant Chief Constable Dave Sutherland said: "The level of violence faced by officers here on Teesside in the summer of 2024 was unprecedented.

"Two years later, we are still committed to arresting those responsible and putting them before the courts."
