New crossing to be installed on busy city road
GoogleWork to create a new crossing on a busy road in Leicester is due to start next week and is expected to take six weeks to complete.
The toucan crossing - which will allow cyclists to cross alongside pedestrians - will be installed on Aylestone Road, close to Hampshire Road and an Aldi supermarket, Leicester City Council said.
A section of Aylestone Road between the Aldi entrance and Duncan Road will be reduced to one lane, controlled by two-way traffic lights, while the work, which is due to start on Tuesday, is carried out.
The road is set to close completely on 12 April, with a signed diversion route in place via Saffron Lane, Glenhills Way and Lutterworth Road.
The city council said the new crossing - which is being paid for with grant funding from the government's Active Travel Fund - would create a safer crossing point for the supermarket and Granby Primary School.
Geoff White, assistant city mayor for environment and transport, said: "This investment will provide a new crossing in a busy residential area and help further extend our network of safe routes for walkers, wheelers and cyclists across the city.
"Every effort will be made to minimise disruption, and we thank people for their patience while these works are carried out."
