Town with two Christmases to welcome summer Santa

A seaside resort is preparing to celebrate Christmas at the height of summer.

Bridlington, on the East Yorkshire coast, is promising a packed programme of festive entertainment on Wednesday.

The town has celebrated "Bridmas Day" in August for the past three years. The idea is to highlight what the town has to offer all year round.

Visitors will be able to meet Santa on the beach, complete a Christmas cracker trail and listen to live, festive music.

There will be a Santa's grotto, festive face painting and Christmas crafts and games, while families can book for a free screening of The Grinch at Bridlington Spa.

A Christmas tree will be put up on the beach and businesses are expected to dress up their stores.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member Nick Coultish said Bridmas Day had become "one of the highlights of Bridlington's events calendar".

Highlights of the events on Wednesday include:

• The Grinch at Bridlington Spa, 13:30 BST (book online for free tickets)
• Coastal Voices choir on South Beach, 10:30, 11:30 and 12:30
• Santa's Grotto on South Beach, 10:15-11:00; 11:30-12:30; 13:00-13:30 and 14:15-15:00
• Crafts and games on South Beach, 10:00-15:00
• Driffield Brass Band on the promenade, 12:00-14:00
• Christmas Market, King Street, 08:00-14:00
• Mr Bubbles Christmas Show, Sewerby Hall, 11:00 and 12:30
