Plans for Sheffield's "most action-packed festive season yet" have been unveiled by the city council.

Christmas market stalls will return to Fargate, Pinstone Street and The Moor, while the city centre will also boast an artificial ice rink, big wheel and snow slide.

For the first time, a free, ticketed celebration will be held on Devonshire Green over the opening weekend.

Councillor Ben Miskell, chair of the Economic Development, Skills and Culture Committee, said: "It's going to be Sheffield's biggest and most ambitious Christmas ever."

More than 50 market cabins will open across the city centre from 12 November, with 80% of the stalls run by local traders, the council said.

"This is about creating a brilliant Christmas for Sheffield residents and visitors, while supporting our local businesses and bringing people into the city centre," Miskell said.

Illuminations are set to light up Haymarket, Fargate, Barker's Pool, Surrey Street, Division Street, Pinstone Street, the Peace Gardens and Cambridge Street.

"Devonshire Green is going to host a Christmas light and celebration event," Miskell said, with more details about the spectacle to be confirmed in the coming weeks.

"It's going to be an opportunity to welcome Christmas together as a city," he added.
