Jack Milburn, Tracy Carter's son-in-law, reached out to National Highways to help with the search

A driver has been reunited with her phone that contained irreplaceable family photos after she drove off with it on her roof.

Tracy Carter lost the device when it flew off her vehicle as she joined the A14 at junction seven in Northamptonshire.

An eagle-eyed National Highways officer helped track it down after spotting a reflection from a sticker on the device flicker when headlights went past.

Carter told the team she was "very grateful" to be reunited with her phone.

Carter was distraught at losing the phone, which held images of her grandchildren and deceased mother.

Her son-in-law, Jack Milburn, reached out to National Highways to help with the search and the device's location was narrowed down using a phone location app.

Traffic officer Harry Marshall was in the area and met up with Milburn to search for the lost phone in the verge.

Marshall said: "The main challenge was the low light conditions and the fact that, although the phone should have lit up when it was called, it was lying face down."

He moved to a bridge where he was able to spot the phone with the help of headlights.

Daniel Shaw, a National Highways network operations manager, said: "It clearly wouldn't be safe for the family to try to retrieve a phone themselves from next to a high-speed road like the A14.

"We have traffic officers patrolling 24/7 and they are there to help. Although this was quite an unusual call we were glad it had a happy ending and the lady has got her precious images and her phone back."
