About 1,000 properties will have their collections disrupted, Derby City Council says

Derby residents are being warned to expect disruption to bin collections after a battery in a bin set a refuse lorry alight.

One of Derby City Council's fleet has been taken off the road following a fire on Wednesday morning.

The council said collections for about 1,000 properties would be affected by the vehicle requiring repairs, but added that despite the "major disruption", no-one was injured in the incident.

Residents were urged not to place batteries, vapes or small electricals in household waste or recycling following the fire.

A council spokesperson said: "One of our collection vehicles caught fire after a battery was put in the bin.

"Incidents like this create major disruption, pulling waste workers and emergency services away from their normal duties and creating additional costs and delays.

"We're doing our best to keep collections running with one less vehicle in service, but some collections may be affected - please bear with us."
