Inside the laboratory working on hantavirus vaccine

Scientists from the University of Bath have developed a new antigen against the Hantaan disease - a type of hantavirus.

The viruses are carried by rodents and most strains do not pass from person to person, but rare instances of human transmission have been documented.

Three people have died following an outbreak of the Andes virus strain on the cruise ship MV Hondius. The World Health Organization has said it is not the start of a pandemic.

Prof Asel Sartbaeva from the University of Bath said the vaccine is showing an "excellent immune response", but it still has to go through clinical trials and approvals before it is rolled out to the public.
