Six city schools set for new road safety measures

Six Birmingham schools are set for new road safety measures.

The schools have been earmarked for work such as speed cushions, pedestrian islands and double yellow lines through the Safer Schools Journeys programme.

The schools include Colebourne Primary School in Hodgehill, Harborne Primary School Annex, Broadmeadow Junior School in Kings Norton, The Olive School in Tyseley, Ninestiles in Acocks Green, and Alston Primary School in Bordesley Green East.

The city council said the work was part of the Road Harm Reduction Strategy which has a goal of preventing all deaths and serious injuries on Birmingham's roads and was adopted last year.

Safer Schools Journey is a city-wide initiative funded through the Clean Air Zone.

It plans to make streets around schools "safer, healthier and more welcoming" and encourage more walking and cycling.

The full proposed measures are on the Birmingham Be Heard website where public consultation is being held until 24 July.

They include narrowing road junctions to slow traffic outside Colebourne Primary School, and creating a new crossing point at Harborne Primary School Annex and relocating a bus stop.

Meanwhile, measures such as bollards to reduce parking are part of plans for The Olive School and Broadmeadow Junior School.
