Radio presenter Kirsten O'Brien received a shock on her final BBC Radio Berkshire show as iconic children's television presenters Dick and Dom put in a surprise appearance.

O'Brien made the announcement that she was leaving the radio station after eight years to read the travel reports on Radio 2 in the afternoons from Monday.

She told listeners: "I've always said I come in here for a bit of a rest, a chat, to hear your stories as well as have a bit of a laugh, and it's been absolutely brilliant."

Her former CBBC colleagues Dick and Dom, who joked that they were taking over the programme, said listeners would miss her "so much".

"What's really funny is watching her be all professional and grown up," Dick, real name Richard McCourt, said.

"The woman you're listening to right now is so far removed away from the person we know."

O'Brien, who presented SMart on CBBC for a decade, met double act Dick & Dom in the 1990s when she was a presenter and Dom, real name Dominic Wood, was, in his own words, a "tea boy".

"You were the master, you trained us," he said.

The duo went on to entertain a generation of children on their own shows such as Dick & Dom in da Bungalow.

"This is an absolute joy having you two here, I had no idea," O'Brien told the pair, who she said she had an "absolute ball" with "back in the day".

During the chaotic segment, the presenter also admitted that their old CBBC co-star Otis the Aardvark was in a bin bag in her loft.

"Dave the puppeteer, or the aardvark?" Wood quipped.

"He's not in a very good way," O'Brien confessed.

"The foam is disintegrating a little bit… every time I get him out more of him falls off."

Signing off to listeners at the end of the four-hour programme, the DJ said: "Eight years I've been here. Started at the old place at Caversham Park doing a bit of covering, did the news on Breakfast, and then the last two years doing brilliant things on this mid-morning show.

"I've really, really enjoyed it and all sorts while I've been here... thank you so much for your company."
