Two areas of Falkirk will benefit from the £20m of funding

Two councillors have been appointed to a board that will oversee £20m of improvements to two areas of Falkirk.

The revitalisation funding comes from the UK government which announced last year there would be up to £5bn of investment for 339 "overlooked" communities across the UK to spend on high streets, parks and public spaces.

Falkirk's Pride in Place neighbourhood board will oversee the funding to improve Hallglen and the Upper Braes.

At a meeting of Falkirk Council, members voted for Labour's Siobhan Paterson, who represents the Upper Braes, and the SNP's Lorna Binnie who represents Falkirk South, which includes Hallglen, to be board members.

The board will be asked to produce a vision for the area over 10 years and to set out a plan to achieve this.

At least 51% of members of the board must be non-political representatives from the community.

The leader of the council said she felt it was better to have a councillor from each ward as they were two very distinct communities.

Councillor Cecil Meiklejohn added she was confident enough people would be recruited to the board to ensure there was enough community representation.

Suzanne Scott was recently appointed as chairperson of the board and Falkirk MP Labour's Euan Stainbank and the Falkirk East and Linlithgow MSP, the SNP's Martyn Day, also have seats.

Board members must be recruited by 17 July and the Pride in Place Plan must be submitted by 30 November.
