Gull's 'lucky escape' after getting stuck in car

A seagull has "miraculously" escaped uninjured after being wedged into the front of a car at high speed on a motorway.

A driver hit the bird while driving along the A1M from Newton Aycliffe, in County Durham, to Darlington train station, and did not realise it was there until he received a message reporting it.

He called Darlington Bird Rescue which found the gull was completely stuck in the grill of the vehicle but had not damaged his wings, legs or back.

Laura Hewitt, founder of the rescue team, said the gull would be looked after with food to recover after his "lucky escape".

She said: "He has no big scrapes, no big wounds, just a few leg scrapes and a lot of damaged feathers.

"He will have a lot of monitoring, some painkillers, and all the food he could wish for to make up for his lucky escape."
