A man in his 60s, who raped a 72-year-old woman, has been jailed for seven years.

Vijay Chawla, of Rectory Lane, Bury, subjected his victim to a "terrifying ordeal" in Manchester in March 2023, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

Chawla, 67, was convicted at Manchester Crown Court of raping and sexually assaulting the same victim.

The force praised the woman's bravery for reporting the "horrifying" attack and bringing Chawla to justice.

Det Sgt Sam Cullen said: "Firstly, I would like to thank the victim in this horrifying incident to come forward and report their abuse to us, allowing us to conduct a thorough investigation.

"Our officers will provide support, conduct thorough investigations, and take firm action against offenders.

"Your allegations will be taken seriously, and you will be treated with dignity and respect."
