A golden retriever dog weighing 30kg was carried down England's highest mountain by rescuers after it injured a paw on the ascent.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) went to the dog's aid on Scafell Pike on Thursday afternoon.

According to rescuers, the dog's owner had bandaged the injured paw and did "a very good job" of carrying the pet as far as they could, but called for help when it became unsafe to carry on.

The rescue operation, which involved 13 members of Wasdale MRT, took five and a half hours.

Posting on the team's Facebook page, a Wasdale spokesperson said: "MRT assessed the dog, re‑bandaged the injury, and began the descent.

"Progress continued until the team met the stretcher party, where the dog was loaded on to the stretcher for the remainder of the journey off the hill."
