South Yorkshire Police said no one was injured in the incident

Gunshots have been fired at a property near Doncaster, sparking a police investigation.

South Yorkshire Police were called at 02:00 BST to Sheppard Road in Balby and no one was found to be hurt.

The force said enquiries were ongoing and there would be an increased police presence in the area.

Det Insp Leanne Hearnshaw said detectives and forensic teams were working to identify those responsible and appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.

"Every time someone pulls a trigger innocent lives are put at risk, and it is fortunate that no one was injured in this incident," she said.

"We have seen first hand the devastating impact gun crime has on our communities. Criminals carrying firearms on our streets is not acceptable and we will not tolerate it here in South Yorkshire."
