Aspiring musicians across south-west England are being given the chance to have a breakthrough moment at one of the UK's biggest summer festivals.

Boardmasters Festival, which returns to Newquay, Cornwall, from 5 to 9 August, has a new talent search - Boardmasters Breakthrough - open to vocalists, bands, DJs and artists of any genre or age.

Organisers said the aim was to shine a light on homegrown talent and give acts a shot at performing on a major stage in front of thousands.

The winning act, announced on 25 May, would get a paid opening slot on the main stage on 9 August and also get full weekend access for themselves and a guest per performer, and professionally shot footage of their set.

'Local talent only'

On top of that, they would get entry to the artist area and be featured on Clunk magazine's Instagram and promoted across Boardies' social channels.

All entries - of any genre - are due to be reviewed by the festival team, with a shortlist drawn up before the final decision is made by BBC Introducing.

However, as the festival website states: "You must be from, or based in, the South West - this comp is for local talent only."

The opportunity comes as the festival gears up for a line-up that includes Lily Allen, Fatboy Slim, Kasabian, The Kooks and Loyle Carner.

BBC Introducing South West presenter Daniel Pascoe said: "BBC Introducing is all about getting local and under-the-radar artists onto big stages, and Boardmasters Breaking is doing just that.

"I remember watching Sam Fender open up the main stage a few years back and look at where he is now.

"It's really exciting to think that an artist from the South West could be starting a very similar journey by entering this competition."
