'Foul smell' and 'grey substance' flowing in river

A grey substance in a river accompanied by a bad smell has been reported by a dog walker.

Bethanne Reed was by the River Eden, in Appleby, when she came across "grey, milky discharge" and an "obvious foul smell" near the Jubilee Bridge on Monday morning.

She said her dog "loves a swim" and "it was a job to keep her out when she saw the spill", adding similar spills "seem to be happening too frequently".

The Environment Agency said it had not received any reports relating to the suspected pollution but asked residents to submit evidence and the exact location.
