A walker has been rescued after falling about 70m on a large hillside in the Peak District.

Edale Mountain Rescue Team (EMRT) said volunteers - along with colleagues from Buxton Mountain Rescue Team - were called at 12:37 BST on Saturdayby a couple who had seen the person tumble down Y Gully on Mam Tor in Derbyshire.

A rope system was set up from the summit to lower a team member down to help the casualty, and the rescuer then took the injured person to the bottom of the hillface, said a spokesperson.

Team members, including a doctor, were then able to start treatment for the "significant, but not life-threatening injuries", added EMRT.

After treatment and pain relief, the casualty was taken by stretcher to the road, handed over to the ambulance service and taken to hospital.

EMRT said: "Well done to the gentleman that went to the casualty on seeing them tumble and stayed with them until our arrival."

The team warned that the Y Gully and East face area of Mam Tor "is what we call a terrain trap".

"It is a dangerous cliff face that draws people to an area of very steep and loose ground, with the additional serious hazard of rock fall from above."
