An exhibition exploring some of Finland's most recognisable characters is opening in Hull.

The Wonders of Moominvalley will be on display at Ferens Art Gallery from Saturday 23 May until Sunday 6 September.

The free, family event includes installations, projections, paintings and dolls, which all bring to life the world of Finnish writer, artist and illustrator Tove Jansson's cuddly creations.

Ferens' exhibitions officer Claire Longrigg said it "speaks to all ages".

She added: "Tove Jansson's stories are rich with emotion, kindness and adventure, and this exhibition allows visitors to experience those qualities in a playful, thoughtful and engaging way."

Alongside the exhibition, the gallery will host a programme of related events, including a theatre performance, storytelling sessions, animation workshops and a talk exploring the life and work of Jansson.

Kath Wynne-Hague, head of service, culture, place and city centre for Hull City Council, said: "I already know that the Moomins will prove very popular with visitors of all ages, and I very much look forward to experiencing it myself."
