A long awaited road is undergoing final safety checks before an opening ceremony in June.

The Carlisle Southern Link Road will connect Junction 42 of the M6 with the A595 to the west of Cumbria.

It is hoped the five-mile (8km) road will ease congestion in Carlisle and connect the planned 10,000-home St Cuthbert's Garden Village to the city centre, when it opens on 12 June.

Leader of Cumberland Council Mark Fryer said the link road was one of the "biggest infrastructure investments" in the area in years.

"This vital scheme, funded through Homes England, will bring long-term benefits for residents, businesses and the local economy by improving connectivity and easing congestion," he said.

"I would like to thank everyone involved in delivering this complex project, and in particular the local community for their patience and understanding while the works have been carried out."

The road was due to open in the summer of 2025, but was delayed due to "higher-than-average rainfall" during construction.

A full safety audit is ongoing and the route is being prepared for public use ahead of the planned opening ceremony at 10:00 BST on 12 June.
