Friends of a Shropshire teen who died suddenly in his sleep have completed a five-day charity bike ride from Ludlow to Arsenal's Emirates stadium in London.

The group completed the 170-mile cycling challenge in memory of 18-year-old Alex Elder, who died in September last year.

The ride raised more than £28,000, with a team of 18 riders taking on the challenge for Birmingham Children's Hospital and Alder Hey Children's Hospital.

Family friend Charlotte Chubb said the fundraising efforts in honour of the Arsenal fan had been "completely overwhelming".

She said the response was "incredible", with the total amount at £28,659.

The money was raised through sponsorship, donations and the support of people and businesses across Ludlow and the surrounding area.

Chubb said: "But the challenge became about much more than the money. Over the five days we laughed, cried, struggled up some very big hills, encouraged each other through the difficult miles and created memories that none of us will ever forget.

The moment the group arrived at the stadium after 170 miles was an "incredibly emotional moment", she said.

She added: "There were 18 riders, but behind them was a huge support team of family and friends, travelling alongside us, keeping us fed, fixing bikes, providing encouragement and making sure we could keep moving towards London."
