Airport design 'breathes' local culture, says mayor
City of Doncaster CouncilDoncaster Sheffield Airport will offer a terminal that "looks, feels and breathes our local culture" when it reopens, Mayor Ros Jones has said.
Newly released images of the design show green Fly Doncaster branding and the original statue of Robin Hood, which dates back to 2005 when it opened under its original name of Robin Hood Airport.
Fly Doncaster is the airport operator and says passenger flights will resume at Easter 2028, although freight flights are expected sooner.
Jones shared the images and described the airport as having "a real individual Doncaster identity".
She said: "The team at the airport aren't just building a gateway to the rest of the world, they are redefining how infrastructure meets the needs of every traveller.
"Our journey is fuelled by deep stakeholder and community engagement.
"By listening to our neighbours and partners early, we've integrated local feedback directly into the terminal's DNA. This isn't just our project, it's a regional asset."
She added that the whole design was based around seamless connectivity with "friction-less travel" through smart tech and "cutting-edge green infrastructure".
City of Doncaster CouncilJones added: "Building the future of flight is a marathon, but with this team and our inclusive, accelerated approach, we're hitting our milestones in record time."
She thanked the team working to fully reopen the airport "especially with all the uncertainty over the last two months".
This was in reference to Reform UK councillors who said they wanted to reconsider a loan, before it was agreed it could go ahead.
Jones, who shared the images on social media, said more pictures would be released in coming weeks.
