Sports stars who attended the opening of a hall of fame at their former school say they hope it will "inspire" the next generation.

Signed shirts, awards and pictures have been put up at Sheldon School in Chippenham, Wiltshire.

Notable alumni include Aston Villa and England football player Tyrone Mings, Paralympic silver medallist Dan Bethell and Bath Rugby player Tom Dunn.

Bethell, who attended the opening on 18 May, said: "I think it's very important for the youngsters to see people they want to emulate and get inspired."

Dan Bethell said the display was "amazing" for the students

"It was really weird, but cool to be back here. It hasn't changed," Bethell said.

He said seeing sports role models when he was at the school changed his life and he hoped the display would encourage pupils to reach their full potential.

"I think having this here is amazing for the students to see everyday when they walk through the corridor, particularly if they feel down or worried and particularly around exams."

Bath Rugby player Tom Dunn said it was a huge thing for him to see himself represented at the school.

"I think rugby has a bit of a private school image. It's a chip that I proudly carry on my shoulder being from a state school, so I really hope that others can see it and be inspired," Dunn said.

"It's a little bit surreal, I remember when I was at Sheldon, Alex Crocket was the guy I would look up to.

"Having someone who's been there and done it, you know you can follow their path.

"I spoke at an assembly four or five years ago - it's a real strange feeling, I get really nostalgic and I have really happy memories," he added.

Headteacher Peter Lynch said the school and all its current and ex-students are like "the Sheldon family".

"We've got fantastic staff that really invest in our students. That's why those positive relationships endeavour."
