Arrest for man who 'bit firefighter during rescue'

A man being rescued from a blaze at a flat has been arrested after biting one of the firefighters saving him.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said the crew member was assaulted while attempting to lead the man to safety on Queen Street in Sheffield at about 20:00 BST on Tuesday.

Chief Fire Officer Chris Kirby said: "Firefighters put themselves in harm's way to protect others and I am extremely concerned that one of our colleagues has been assaulted in this way."

South Yorkshire Police said it had been reported that the 62-year-old man had bitten the firefighter, causing minor injury. He was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an emergency services worker and arson endangering life.

A spokesperson said the man had been bailed pending further inquiries.
