Council approves £30m expansion of SEND school

Plans to expand a school for children with special educational needs and disabilities have been approved by Leeds City Council.

The authority has pledged £30.6m of its capital budget to demolish part of the existing school at Broomfield South Specialist Inclusive Learning Centre in Belle Isle, and build a new three-storey teaching block.

Tilbury Douglas Construction Ltd would be responsible for the redevelopment at Broom Place, a council report said.

The facility would provide 100 extra spaces, which would be staggered during the 2027-28 academic year due to delays in the planning process, councillors were told.

The new main school building was expected to be completed first in February 2028, with the exterior and demolition of the old building set to be finished by September the same year, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS).

A planning officer said there had been seven public objections to the project, primarily concerns over noise and the building's appearance.

All the concerns had been addressed, the report seen by councillors stated.

"The proposed design solution is considered to be acceptable and the impact of the development on the living conditions of surrounding residents has also been safeguarded," it added.
