A former care home that has stood unused since 2017 could be used for temporary supported accommodation if a council's plan gets the go-ahead.

West Berkshire Council wants to use its former Chestnut Walk care home in Hungerford for residents who need housing.

The 12-bedroom building was built in the early 1990s and was used as a nursing home for elderly people until it closed nine years ago.

The council said it was damaged in an arson attack in 2022, which caused smoke damage and contributed to its "increased deterioration".

Most of the council's managed accommodation is based around Newbury and Thatcham.

Its planning application to change the building's use will be decided in due course.
