Community choir seeks new director after 34 years
BBCOne of the largest community choirs in the East Midlands is looking for a new leader after 34 years.
Simon Thompson, 64, is retiring as musical director of West Bridgford Social Singers in September.
Having started with 12 members in 1992, it now boasts 95 and prides itself on being friendly and supportive.
But the group said that despite advertising widely, they have had limited response to their appeal.
'It means everything'
The choir was started after Thompson, then a teacher, so impressed parents with his school choir they asked him to start an adult version.
Apart from six years living abroad, he has lead the choir since, missing only two rehearsals, even through the Covid lockdown.
Thompson said: "It means everything. It is something that represents a team and a community.
"It's a community of friends, a community of singers, a community of really lovely people who feel encouraged and supported, and come along and just enjoy the sound they make, which is a really great sound."
While stepping back from the role of steering the society, he will remain a member, singing in the bass section.
"I've never had a chance to sing with the group, so it's a new chapter," said Thompson.
"I think my legacy will be one of teamwork, encouragement, a smile on faces.
"More than anything, taking opportunities and, as a group, going out there and singing to new audiences."

Helen Beaumont, who has been with the choir for three years, said: "Simon is retiring, which we are all very sad about because he has brought so much, but he is ready to move on.
"And we need to find someone, not to replace him, but someone who can add a new dimension, because there just aren't two Simons.
"Because Simon is so unique, I think it has to be someone completely different, completely new, have their own way of doing things."
