A town has set the date for its first fireworks display since it redeveloped its waterfront.

Stockton Borough Council has not held its firework display since 2021 due to the redevelopment of the town centre, which saw the demolition of a former shopping centre and creation play areas and performances spaces.

A free family event is due to take place on November 1, featuring live music and a fireworks display, which crowds will be able to view from the urban park's new amphitheatre.

The Labour-led council said it did not have final costings for the event but it would be paid for using money approved in its budget.

A council spokesperson said: "The fireworks are funded as part of the council's agreed community services, environment and culture budget, which is included in our medium term financial plan."

The pot for this financial year is about £57m and covers funding for events, libraries, waste collections and operation of leisure facilities, among others.

The redeveloped waterfront opened in June and the council said it expected tens of thousands of people to attend the popular display.

Cabinet member for environment, leisure and culture Nigel Cooke said the new Waterfront park offered "a brand new vista and whole new experience for the event".

"Stockton Fireworks, one of the North East's biggest free displays, has always been one of the borough's most popular events, and we know residents and visitors alike will be excited to see it return," he said.

The council said viewing locations would be available along Riverside Road, including the event space adjacent to Riverside Car Park, the bankside off Bishop Street and the amphitheatre.

Entertainment will start at noon with performances in Finkle Square, a fun fair and food stalls.
