A much-loved librarian has shelved her last book after serving her community for nearly half a century.

Gail Fordham retired after working at Atherstone Library for 45 years, marking the end of an era for the north Warwickshire-based facility.

She was praised for running Rhyme Time sessions, which encouraged children to start reading from an early age.

"I can't thank all my lovely customers enough. But most of all, all of the children I've helped and had fun with along the way. I will miss them all," she said on her last day.

Her career also included stints at libraries in Dordon and Polesworth, as well as working with local nurseries.

Sharing a tribute, Banana Moon Day Nursery posted on Facebook: "Over the years, Gail has joined Banana Moon for so many wonderful story times, supported our visits to the library, and always made time to share her love of books with our nursery children.

"Her kindness, enthusiasm and passion for reading have helped inspire so many little learners.

"We are so grateful for all the memories, stories and smiles along the way. Now it's time for Gail to sit back, relax and enjoy a book or two."

Councillor Mike Bannister added: "Rhyme Time is a great thing for the very young who come in with parents, carers and grandparents, and get into all the great things a library can do at a very early age.

"It's about building brighter, safer futures for our children. All of us at Warwickshire County Council are very grateful to Gail for all she has done."
