New nature reserve memorial pays tribute to miners
Broxtowe Borough CouncilA memorial paying tribute to miners who lost their lives at a colliery in Broxtowe has been unveiled.
It has been installed at Colliers Wood nature reserve - part of the former Moorgreen Colliery site - along with an interpretation board explaining the area's mining history.
The new additions were unveiled at an event on Wednesday - the culmination of a series of improvements at the reserve by Broxtowe Borough Council in partnership with the Friends of Colliers Wood.
A mine car and pulley wheel salvaged from the colliery - positioned alongside two half winding wheels - have also been restored and painted in their original light grey.
Milan Radulovic, leader of the borough council, said Broxtowe's mining history "still holds a firm place in the hearts" of many residents.
He added: "These new additions provide a meaningful way to remember those who sadly lost their lives, while keeping this important part of our local culture alive."
Broxtowe Borough CouncilThe main circular route at the nature reserve has also been resurfaced as part of the project, improving accessibility and enabling year-round use in all weather.
Meanwhile, a new viewing platform over the main pond allows visitors to step out over the water and better experience the site's wildlife, the council said.
Alan Green, chairman of the Friends of Colliers Wood, said the group was "delighted with the new memorial and the continuing investment" by the council in the nature reserve.
