Fast-track cardiology unit cuts admissions, trust says

A new fast-track cardiology unit has cut inpatient admissions by 25% in its first three weeks and provided "extremely encouraging" results, a hospital trust has said.

The same day emergency care unit, which opened at East Surrey Hospital in Redhill in August, aims to improve the flow of patients out of A&E to reduce treatment times.

Surrey and Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust said 80 patients have been assessed, treated and discharged within 24 hours since the unit opened, helping free-up beds for more serious patients.

Alex Stamp, chief executive at the trust, said the unit "will improve the wider experience for those attending our Emergency Department".

He added: "We always strive to offer our patients the best possible care and improve their healthcare experience wherever we can, and I am really pleased to be able to bring innovative new services like this new unit to our local community."

The unit opens from 08:00 to 20:00 BST, and treats all patients who arrive at the emergency department with potential heart conditions.

Cardiology consultant Dr Shrilla Banerjee said: "It's been extremely encouraging to see the early results from our new cardiology same day emergency care unit in its first three weeks and demonstrates the difference specialist same day care can make for our patients.

"By providing rapid access to expert assessment and diagnostic testing, we can ensure more patients receive the care they need sooner - which can often improve recovery rates and reduce anxiety for those experiencing cardiac issues."
