An inquest has opened into the death of a 14-year-old boy who reportedly went missing after going swimming in a lake.

Police were called at about 15:30 BST on 26 May to Hawley Lake near Farnborough, Hampshire.

The boy's body was found the following day following a search involving a police helicopter, drone units, police divers and the fire service.

The teenager was named as Samuel Murphy, from Camberley, Surrey, at the brief coroner's hearing in Winchester.

The cause of death has not yet been determined and further investigations are being carried out, the court heard.

The inquest was adjourned for a full hearing on 6 July 2027.

A total of 17 people were reported to have suffered open-water deaths during the recent heatwave.

Previously, Aldershot MP Alex Baker said she was "deeply saddened" by the tragedy.

The Labour MP thanked the emergency services for their "swift and dedicated response" to the incident, before urging people to "please look after yourselves and those around you in this heat, especially around open water".
