Children have swapped inner city life for a day hitting the waves along the coast.

A group of 24 children aged 10 and 11 travelled from the London boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham and Wandsworth to Putsborough Beach near Croyde in North Devon for an introduction to the ocean and sea-based activities.

The trip was organised through charity City Kids Surfing, which has been taking groups from London to coastal locations since 2017.

Tom Franklin, the charity's founder, said the aim of the trips was to help young people build confidence and resilience while also being able to connect with nature.

"We believe the kids need to be at the beach," Franklin said.

"From all of our experience, the best way to fall in love with the ocean, not just experience it, is through surfing, playing in the waves and having fun."

Activities during the trip included surf lessons for the children and team-building sessions led by a team of volunteers including former professional surfer Sandy Kerr and Scottish women's surfing champion Phoebe Strachan.

Teacher Lucy Brierley said the children really enjoyed their time at the beach.

"Everything is so new and alien at first," Brierley said.

"They're in the sea then they're being hit by waves and then they're given this big board that they have to manage somehow.

"The things they remember are funny - jellyfish has been a common theme."
