Northampton Town's chairman has said "lessons will be learnt" following the club's relegation.

The Cobblers were relegated from League One on Wednesday following a 2-1 defeat at Luton Town.

They have lost all of their last seven league games and are currently bottom of the division with four games remaining.

In a statement, club chairman Kelvin Thomas said: "Lessons will be learnt, we have proved we can get out of League Two, and now the goal is to get back into League One as soon as possible and all of our focus moves towards that."

The Cobblers had been 12th in December after a 3-1 home win over AFC Wimbledon, but a run of just one victory in 16 matches led to the sacking of then manager Kevin Nolan.

Despite the appointment of interim boss Colin Calderwood, results failed to improve, with the team losing every match since the change in management.

Thomas added: "We are obviously extremely disappointed about how this season is finishing.

"Results over the last three or four months have just not been good enough. To be where we were at Christmas and then to drop off so significantly really hurts.

"We fully understand the pain and everyone at the club feels the same."

Speaking on BBC Radio Northampton after relegation, supporter Martin Maloney said: "It's been an absolute disaster since Christmas.

"I don't think anyone was holding out any hope [they would stay up,] and I just hope [the team] finish with a bit of fight."

Another fan, Keeley Wilson-Townsend, said: "There's not one of us who felt they've experienced a more torrid season.

"The thing that's worse than the performances... is the application. I didn't feel as if the team were gelling. Something has just felt off in 2026."
