A Reform UK councillor who was under investigation following allegations of racism has been reinstated by the party.

Glenn Gibbins was elected to represent Hylton Castle ward on Sunderland City Council in May. He was then put under investigation after being accused of posting racist comments online about the city's Nigerian community.

Reform UK said following an internal disciplinary process the councillor had now been readmitted to the party with a final written warning.

A spokesperson said: "He has apologised for making the post and accepts that it was made in extremely poor taste showing poor judgement." Gibbins has been approached for comment.

His original post, which has since been deleted, was first reported by Hope Not Hate and believed to be from March 2024.

He was also accused of misogyny in earlier posts and Gibbins apologised via The Chronicle in May, the same month Reform took over Sunderland City Council.
