Water firm seeks permission for temporary storage
BBCGuernsey Water is seeking planning permission to place a shipping container in a car park for the next two years.
The 12.2m (39.37ft) container would supplement existing storage space and be used to hold materials required for "essential" updates to the island's water infrastructure, the utility firm said.
While it was "not an ideal solution", it said a shipping container would avoid "the additional expense of renting external storage space, helping to limit upward pressure on customer bills".
The container would be temporarily placed on the car parking area "immediately to the north of St Andrew's Reservoir" and people would not be able to see it from the road, it added.
In documents submitted to planning, Guernsey Water said the proposed container would be "securely stored" within an "enclosed industrial area" at its Brickfield House headquarters.
It would have no requirement for the use of energy, and there would be no possibility of pollution, as there would be no construction being undertaken or waste being produced, the firm said.
If permission for the container was granted, it would offer "a practical and cost-effective temporary option for the next two years", Guernsey Water added.
