Cornwall Council has since removed the sign near Falmouth, which erroneously directed motorists to Plymouth Marina

There was confusion in a Cornish town when a new road sign appeared, with directions to a city marina 70 miles (112.6km) away and in a different county.

The new 'Plymouth Marina' brown tourist sign appeared in Falmouth on Tuesday, printed beside the words, 'The Greenbank Hotel' - which is in Falmouth.

A spokesperson for Cornwall Council said the sign was taken down on Thursday and would be replaced.

They said: "While Plymouth Marina is worthy of a tourist sign in the right location, this particular sign was not made to our specification."
