Part of a busy A-road is likely to remain closed into a third day due to a surface defect, causing disruption for drivers.

One lane of the eastbound A14 between junction 57 at Ipswich, past the Orwell Bridge, and junction 58 at Seven Hills has been shut since Monday.

National Highways warned motorists of 20-minute delays and seven miles (11km) of congestion on Tuesday morning, and said specialist contractors had been sent to assess the site.

In an update on social media it confirmed overnight resurfacing work had been planned but, due to high temperatures, the lane closure was "likely to remain in place tomorrow (Wednesday) to allow tarmac to cure".

With the closure in place until Wednesday, it is likely to impact motorists getting to the annual Suffolk Show at Trinity Park on the outskirts of Ipswich.

A National Highways spokesperson said: "Repairs are required to a defect in the road surface on the eastbound of the A14, caused by the extreme heat.

"We are looking to minimise disruption as much as possible by carrying out resurfacing work overnight. A full closure of the carriageway will be needed but we hope to have the road fully reopened during tomorrow."
