Closures on the A6 in May and June will enable maintenance work on the Irthlingborough viaduct

A major road will be shut in May and early June as part of continuing work to repair a viaduct.

The Irthlingborough viaduct, which carries the A6, will be closed from 20:00 BST on 29 May until 06:00 on 1 June, with a "contingency closure" in place from 20:00 on 1 June until 06:00 on 2 June.

The works are part of a programme to re-waterproof a section of the viaduct over the River Nene.

North Northamptonshire Council said it would deliver a "safe and durable solution" to keep the structure "fit for purpose for many years to come".

Teams working on the project had found the concrete deck of the road was in "considerably poorer condition" than expected, during an initial phase of works earlier this month.

The Reform UK-controlled authority said the "unforeseen circumstance means the original scope of works has been revised".

Martin Griffiths, leader of North Northamptonshire Council, said: "I appreciate this additional closure is frustrating for drivers and I would ask that everyone remains patient with us whilst we resolve this ongoing problem."

Diversions will be in place, and drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.

The full list of roadworks and diversions can be found on the council's website.
