A burst water main has resulted in the closure of two schools and affected up to 3,000 homes.

Vista Academy and Littleport Community Primary School, both in Littleport Cambridgeshire, closed towards the beginning of the school day and sent pupils home.

An Anglian Water spokesperson apologised and said the burst main occurred at about 01:00 BST, but most people began to be affected from 11:00.

The company, which has delivered bottled water to customers on its priority services register, said a specialist digger was now on site and work has begun to repair the main.

"While we work on the repair, we're using tankers to inject extra water into the local system, to keep taps flowing for as many houses as possible," the spokesperson added.

The company was unable to confirm when the town's water supply would return to normal, but would post updates on its website.

The spokesperson said: "We'd like to thank our customers in Littleport for bearing with us while we get things back to normal as soon as we can."
