A Victorian rail swing bridge is to shut for a weekend to allow new equipment to be fitted to improve safety and reliability, Network Rail has said.

Goole Swing Bridge was opened more than 150 years ago and carries trains over the River Ouse in East Yorkshire.

Power cables and new control units will be installed as part of a £200,000 upgrade.

Buses will replace train services between Hull and Doncaster during the work, scheduled for 17 and 18 October.

Network Rail said much of the Grade II*-listed bridge's machinery dated back to the 19th Century.

Head of route operations Mark Hayles said: "By renewing power cables and key control units, we're reducing the risk of faults and helping to keep trains moving reliably through this important location.

"We're sorry to anyone whose journey will be affected while we carry out this work, and thank passengers for their patience while these essential upgrades are completed."
