Man in hospital and road closed after Byker attack
BBCA man is in hospital and a busy high street has been closed after a man was seriously injured in an assault.
Northumbria Police said it was called to Shields Road, in the Byker area of Newcastle, at 19:25 BST on Tuesday after reports of an attack in the area.
The Great North Air Ambulance Service said it sent a critical care team to the scene and it assisted the North East Ambulance Service in transporting a man to hospital.
Police said Shields Road was closed to traffic but there was "no wider risk to the public".
An ambulance service spokesperson said it it was called to the scene after reports a person had been "seriously injured" in the attack.
"We sent two emergency ambulance crews to the scene along with a clinical team leader, our Hazardous Area Response Team and the Great North Air Ambulance, who treated and transported the patient to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle," the spokesperson said.
