A police officer has appeared in court charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice over claims she lied to avoid a penalty for speeding.

PC Abigail Byrne, 29, appeared at Sheffield Magistrates' Court on Thursday after being charged following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

Byrne was alleged to have provided a false or misleading account to avoid receiving a sanction for a speeding offence in Kirklees in January 2025.

Following the hearing she was released on unconditional bail to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 7 May.

The IOPC began its investigation in June 2025 following a referral from West Yorkshire Police and Byrne was suspended from the force in September 2025.

The investigation concluded in February 2025 and was referred to the Crown Prosecution Service, which charged Byrne with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
